Chapter 16

Hunter

* * *

The scouting party should have been back by now. It had been five days since I sent them to the far southeastern borders of Frostborne. I’d been careful not to tell them exactly what to search for, just to report any unusual activity. With each passing day, my apprehension grew. I didn’t know if my scouts were alive or dead, and the waiting was killing me.

To distract myself, I indulged in daily visits to Zeyna, sometimes multiple times per day. I didn’t want to repeat what happened by the lake, so I insisted she stay in bed, but the stubborn woman refused to rest. Three servants had already declined to watch her because she disobeyed my orders, wandering around the chambers or the halls, restless and curious, reading from the library, sitting with the sacred tree. Basically, being a pain in the ass.

After breakfast, I went to her chambers to check her healing progress.

“I’ve been stuck inside most of my life,” she complained, fighting me as I captured her hands, examining them. “Now I feel like your prisoner.”

Desire flashed through me when she resisted me, and I was tempted to slide my knee between hers and spread her thighs and pleasure her as she’d never been pleasured before.

“Are you going to fight me on this?” I ran my fingertip along her red but healing skin. Three days of applying the salve and bandaging, then two days of letting the skin dry out had done the trick.

“No.” She slumped back into the chair. Good. My leopard purred inside me. It liked it when she submitted, so did I, but it was a fight to get her to do so, and I liked the challenge.

“Would you like to be my prisoner?” I shouldn’t have said it but couldn’t help myself. Each day my affection grew stronger, made me bolder. She was so hard to stay away from. The more she resisted me, the more I wanted her. She had this hold on me like no other woman.

Like it or not, this woman had somehow managed to seduce my Leopard without ever touching either of us. He was determined to have her as his mate. So was I.

As soon as I met her, I’d recognized something different in Zeyna. She’d sparked my heart to life in a way my wife never had. But Zeyna was no snow leopard, not even a shifter, not that there was anything wrong with relationships between species. It was just with The Seven’s stranglehold over the kingdom, the Rohym and my pack would never accept and recognize her as my mate.

Then there were other complications. I was manipulating her, and guilt hung heavy like a stone around my neck. I’d been selfish and wrong, and she would walk away when she discovered my deception. It would break my leopard. Break me. And there was nothing I could do about it because it was already done.

The fierce glare she gave me, and the way she tried to pull away, spread warmth in my chest.
